While most of us have heard about the IB Diploma Program for high school students, IB curriculum also has a Primary Years Program PYP for elementary students. The main aim of this program is to promote critical thinking, inquiry based learning and independent learners.

The main aim of IB PYP curriculum is to encourage students to connections between local and global issues in the real world context using inquiry based approach.
- The curriculum focuses on students personal and emotional needs.
- It encourages children to think independently and responsibly
- Promotes international openness
There are 5 essential elements of PYP Program
- Concepts – Students are made to learn through inquiry , asking questions in order to develop an in depth understanding. ( What we want our learners to UNDERSTAND? )
- Knowledge – Students gain knowledge which is both disciplinary and transdisciplinary. ( What all want our learners to KNOW?)
- Skills – Students learn skills like critical thinking which they apply during learning and throughout in life. ( What do we want our learners to USE )
- Attitude – Students are encouraged to develop an attitude which contributes to international open mindedness and wellbeing of individuals ( What we want our learners to SHOW? )
- Action – Students with successful inquiry based leaning leads to more responsible and thoughtful actions. ( What do we want our learners DO? )
Through the model of transdisciplinary learning students engage with different range of subjects like languages ( English and Hindi) , maths, science, social studies , Arts (Western & Indian Music, Theatre, Dance and Visual Arts) , Personal, Social and Physical Education (includes Sports, Yoga, Mindfulness and Well-being). Foreign languages is introduced from grade 7th. The learning of subjects is done through the ‘Inquiry Pedagogy’, in which students actively inquire about things around them and learn. It helps each student in developing an understanding of world around them better .
PYP program gives equal focus to both academic and non academic domains for students to build their interests and abilities in all the aspects of the curriculum. The students are expected to be fully immersed in their learning as the program is rigorous and challenging. But having said that there are no tests or grades in the IB PYP Program.
IS IB PYP Program Hard
PYP Program is not necessarily harder than basic elementary school curriculum but it is definitely different. Because of its unique nature it can be either be easy or difficult for certain types of students.
- In PYP Program students are taught to take control of their own learnings. Children who are used to do things by telling what to do and how to do can find it a bit intimidating or uncomfortable to do things on their own.
- Some parents or students might not like the transdisciplinary framework . Some children can find it difficult to make connections across subject areas and prefer one subject at a time.
- PYP Program involves to work in groups to produce elaborate project and share it with the entire school community. Some students can find it intimidating to collaborate with others.
Conclusion
IB PYP is for students aged 3 to 12 years, from nursery to grade 5th. It focuses on building strong foundation not just in academics but also in social and economic growth. Children are encouraged to explore and ask questions and develop a global perspective. The IB PYP curriculum is unique with its transdisciplinary approach through which students are encouraged to make connections between local and global issues across traditional subject areas. The IB PYP is much more than just an academic framework — it’s a journey that shapes young learners into curious, confident, and compassionate individuals.
For parents, choosing the IB PYP means choosing an education that builds a strong foundation of values, knowledge, and life skills — ensuring that children grow into well-rounded global citizens.
